Prati is the best neighborhood to stay near the Vatican. It sits immediately north of Vatican City: you are 5-15 minutes on foot from St. Peter's and the Vatican Museums, but in a genuine Roman residential area — with real trattorias, local bars and quiet streets at night, not a tourist bubble.
Borgo is even closer but has very few quality accommodation and restaurant options. Trastevere and the historic center are charming, but 30-50 minutes from the Vatican. If your trip revolves around St. Peter's and the Museums, Prati wins hands down.

Elegant, quiet residential district right north of the Vatican. Authentic restaurants, Metro A (Ottaviano/Lepanto), safe streets that are silent at night. The best balance between proximity to St. Peter's and real Roman life. This is where our apartment is.
The medieval lanes right by St. Peter's Square. Very close, but very touristy: few real restaurants, high prices and little local atmosphere. Only worth it if being steps from the entrance is your single absolute priority.
Vibrant, bohemian and full of bars, but far from the Vatican and noisy late into the night. Lovely for evenings, inconvenient if you wake early for Vatican Museums opening time.
Perfectly central for the Pantheon, Navona and Campo de' Fiori, but chaotic, crowded and on average pricier. Great if your trip is built around the ancient core rather than the Vatican.

During the Jubilee period, availability near the Vatican sells out far faster than usual and prices rise, because visitor numbers are much higher.
