Osteria dell'Angelo
A Prati institution. The fixed lunch menu is exceptional value — two courses and wine included for around €25. The cacio e pepe is made properly: no cream, just pecorino and pasta water. Reservations essential, it fills up fast.
After years living in Prati and recommending places to hundreds of guests, this is my honest list of restaurants near the Vatican. These aren't "top 10" lists pulled from aggregator sites — they're places I eat at myself and send my guests to with confidence. I've also added a section on where not to eat, because knowing what to avoid near St. Peter's saves you €40 and a disappointing meal.
The block of restaurants on Via della Conciliazione — the wide avenue connecting St. Peter's Square to Castel Sant'Angelo — and those directly facing St. Peter's Square are almost always overpriced and poor quality. They rely entirely on tourist foot traffic: prices are 30-50% higher than comparable places 5 minutes away, and the food is often pre-prepared.
The rule: if a restaurant shows laminated photos of dishes, has a waiter outside waving you in, or displays a €3-5 "coperto" per person, turn around and walk. Five minutes into Prati doubles the quality at the same price.

A Tuscan-Roman restaurant open since 1963. If you want to splurge once, this is where I send guests for a real bistecca. The wine list has genuine Chianti Classico selections. Evenings only on weekdays; also open for lunch at weekends.
Gabriele Bonci's pizza al taglio is world-famous for its slow-fermented dough and creative toppings. It's a standing/takeaway spot — no table service. Come between 12:00 and 13:30 for maximum variety; the line moves fast. One of the genuinely unmissable food experiences in Rome.
If you want to sit down for a real Roman thin-crust pizza dinner in Prati, La Pratolina is consistently good, moderately priced and doesn't require booking on most weeknights. The marinara and the classica are the reliable choices.
My favourite spot in Prati for aperitivo. Large selection of natural wines, craft beers and excellent cicchetti (small bites) from 18:00. At lunch it works well as a quick meal — sandwiches, salads, pasta. The crowd is a mix of locals and in-the-know visitors, which is always a good sign.
Bread, pizza al taglio and supplì to take away or eat standing at the counter. Roscioli is one of Rome's most respected bakery names. This Prati branch is perfect if you're heading to the Vatican in the morning and want a quick, cheap, quality breakfast or snack.

Many Prati restaurants close for 2-3 weeks in August (Ferragosto). If you visit in mid-August the options narrow a little, and the places that stay open tend to be the more tourist-oriented ones — so checking opening hours in advance matters more than usual. I always remind guests who book in summer.

Vatican Luxury Apartment is in the heart of Prati. I give every guest an up-to-date restaurant list at check-in, with notes on what's open that week.
Check availability →The key rule: avoid restaurants on Via della Conciliazione and those facing St. Peter's Square. Walk 5 minutes into the Prati side streets (Via Candia, Via degli Scipioni, Via Properzio): the quality-to-price ratio improves immediately.
To eat well on a budget near the Vatican, go for pizza al taglio and street food: Pizzarium Bonci (€4–8 a slice), Forno Roscioli in Prati (€3–8) and Il Sorpasso for a €6–10 aperitivo. For a full sit-down meal, Osteria dell'Angelo's fixed lunch menu (~€25 with wine) is the best value.
The four Roman pasta classics: cacio e pepe (pecorino + black pepper), carbonara (egg + guanciale + pecorino, no cream), amatriciana (tomato + guanciale + pecorino) and gricia (guanciale + pecorino, no tomato). They're best at a traditional trattoria like Osteria dell'Angelo. For street food, supplì (fried rice balls with melting mozzarella) are quintessentially Roman.
Roman cuisine isn't traditionally vegetarian, but most Prati restaurants offer solid options: cacio e pepe, grilled vegetables, supplì (often vegetarian) and pizza. Il Sorpasso has the widest variety of vegetarian cicchetti for aperitivo. For a fully vegetarian/vegan restaurant, Ops! on Via Candia is a reliable Prati option.
Eat before 12:30 or after 14:00 to avoid the peak hour at Prati restaurants. Between 12:30 and 14:00 popular spots like Osteria dell'Angelo fill up. Dinner is typically after 20:00: arriving at 19:30 gives you the best chance of a table without a reservation at places that don't require one.
