Metro and buses in Rome in 2026: tickets, hours and useful lines

I’m Paola and I use Rome’s public transport every day from the Prati district. Getting around here isn’t as complicated as it seems, but you need a bit of orientation. Here’s the practical guide to metro and bus tickets in Rome, with updated 2026 prices and the tips I give my guests.

2026 ATAC tickets: prices

The metro ticket in Rome is the same for metro, bus and tram. Here are the fares:

• Single BIT ticket: €1.50 — valid 100 minutes (1 metro ride + unlimited buses)
• 24h day pass: €7.00 · 48h: €12.50 · 72h: €18.00
• Weekly: €24.00 · Monthly: €35.00
• Under 10s travel free

You buy them at the machines in the metro, at a tobacconist or with the uTick app (unstable: always keep a physical ticket as backup). They are no longer sold on board buses. Always validate your ticket: the fine for failing to validate is €100.

The metro: lines A and B

Line A (orange) is the most useful for tourists. Key stops: Ottaviano–San Pietro (Vatican and Prati), Barberini (Trevi Fountain 5 min away), Spagna, Flaminio (Villa Borghese), Termini (hub).

Line B (blue) serves the Colosseo, Circus Maximus and the eastern area. You change at Termini between the two lines.

Hours: 5:30–23:30 Sunday to Thursday, 5:30–1:30 Friday and Saturday (with replacement night buses at the weekend).

Useful buses and trams

Buses cover the areas without metro (Trastevere, Appia Antica). Key lines: 40 and 64 (Termini–Vatican), 23 (Lungotevere towards Trastevere/Testaccio), H (Termini–Trastevere). Tram 8 goes to Trastevere, Tram 19 departs from Piazza Risorgimento (a few steps from my home) towards Villa Borghese. Recommended app: Moovit for real-time schedules.

From the airport to the centre

From Fiumicino: the Leonardo Express to Termini in 32 minutes, €14 (€7 children 4–12), every 15–30 minutes. The regional FL1 costs €8 but arrives at Tiburtina, not Termini. Official taxi (white, metered): flat fare €50 to the historic centre. From Ciampino: shuttle bus at €5–7 or taxi at €31.

From Prati to the attractions

The advantage of staying in Prati: the Vatican and historic centre are reachable on foot. St. Peter’s in 7–10 min, the Musei Vaticani in 12–15 min, the Trevi Fountain 12 min by metro, the Colosseo 22–25 min (Line A + B). All the routes are in my guide to the Prati district.
