Prati district and Trastevere: two faces of Rome compared

I’m Paola and I live in the Prati district, near the Vatican. Prati and Trastevere are two different faces of the same Rome: the first orderly and elegant, the second working-class and bohemian among alleys and trattorias. I’ll tell you about both and which to choose based on what you’re looking for.

Prati: elegance, services and the Vatican on foot

The Prati district was built in the late 19th century on a grid plan: wide avenues, shops, excellent pastry shops. From here St. Peter’s and Castel Sant’Angelo are a few minutes’ walk away. In the evening it’s livable but quiet, ideal for those returning after museums and walks. Via Cola di Rienzo is the shopping street, and Metro A (Lepanto, Ottaviano) opens up the rest of the city. Trastevere: alleys, trattorias and sunsets from the Janiculum

Trastevere is the classic maze of alleys, tiny squares and venues. By day it’s photogenic, in the evening it fills with nightlife (especially Thursday–Saturday). Recommended half-day route: Ponte Sisto, Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere with the basilica, then the climb up to the Gianicolo (Janiculum) for sunset. Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the crush in the narrow streets.

Where to eat

In Prati: Via Cola di Rienzo and the Piazza Mazzini area for less touristy spots. In Trastevere: look for trattorias with menus in Italian and clear prices; the Piazza San Cosimato area mixes venues and a market.

How to get from Prati to Trastevere

Bus 23 along the Lungotevere (~20 min), or on foot in about 30 minutes if you like walking.
