Rome in spring 2026: the best time to visit

I’m Paola and I’ll tell you as a host: those who visit Rome in spring never regret it. From March to May the temperatures are pleasant, the light is extraordinary, the gardens are in bloom and there are no queues under the August sun. Here’s the month-by-month guide to weather, events and what to do.

Weather month by month

• March (8–15°C): the days grow longer, fresh mornings, possible rain. Museums without queues. Bring a light raincoat and a jumper.
• April (12–20°C): the most variable month. Before Easter it’s manageable; during Holy Week maximum crowds at the Vatican; after Easter it stabilises. Layered clothing is essential.
• May (16–25°C): the golden month. Long days, clear skies, open terraces, gardens in bloom. T-shirt by day, a light jacket in the evening.

The events of spring 2026

March: International Women’s Day (8 March), the Rome Marathon at the end of the month (some roads closed), the spring equinox.

April: Holy Week and Easter (29 March–6 April 2026), the big event — read my guide to Easter in Rome 2026. Then the Birth of Rome (21 April, the city’s founding) with parades at the Circus Maximus, and the FAI Spring Days.

May: the May Day Concert in Piazza San Giovanni, the Internazionali BNL d’Italia tennis tournament at the Foro Italico, and the Roseto Comunale (Municipal Rose Garden) on the Aventine, open only in May with a view of the Circus Maximus.

What to do: the experiences not to miss

Wander with no destination: the Gianicolo at dawn for the most beautiful view of Rome, the Appia Antica closed to cars on Sundays, Trastevere in the morning without tourists. Visit the gardens in bloom: Villa Borghese, the Botanical Garden in Trastevere, the Quirinale Gardens. And treat yourself to an outdoor aperitivo on the terraces of Prati at sunset, one of the most Roman things there is.

What to pack

A “layered” approach: a jacket or cardigan, a light raincoat, comfortable shoes (the cobblestones are merciless), something to cover shoulders and knees in churches, sunglasses. Leave the heavy coat and high boots at home.

Where to stay
